Buffy S8 Books 6 and 7

I'm sure everyone is aware of the thin line that separates being taken seriously and being a caricature.

It's pretty much how I feel about the new villain / set-up, in these books. That is if the villain can be called a villain, after all, in the Buffyverse, what she did pretty much all of our heroes have done. Dawn probably didn't, unless it's later revealed in some flash back she accidentaly sat on someone. :)

Unless doing it to a Slayer or being oh, so very arrogant about it is what makes you a villain, I have a hard time thinking of Gigi as a villain, at least for the time being.

And I can't take it seriously, not with that dialogue. It could have worked for some aristocratic character in Black Adder, but for a serious one? You're taking the piss. :)

But, apart of my inability to take the story seriously, on account of the ridiculous dialogue, it has some nice touches. I liked the way all the Scoobies were written. We had nice continuity, with a wizard that can fly and that has surveillance pics of Buffy from the first comic, implying he was Flying Boots character from book one. The anti-Slayer organization is pulled more firmly towards the bad guy camp, and last, a nice dig at all the people who like to call Buffy Elizabeth. :)

Minor nitpick, I still have no freakin' idea when this book takes place.

If you're a fan of Joss Whedon's work you've come to realize that he isn't terribly interested in some things. Like for instance, things making sense in a world building way, or the resolution for a problem not making much rational sense.

Thing is, at least for me, if you're invested in the characters, you really don't care that for instance the answer to the important question of "How do you stop Acathla" is a McGuffin that's given to the characters on the last episode.

If, however, you don't really care about the characters then "Why didn't the Guardians show up before" or "Why are the ubervamps so easy to kill now", not to mention the "Who came up with this stupid plan" all nag at you.

So, what did I think about the book? I didn't particularly care about the main character. Yes, it's shame, but this is BtVS, you expect people to die.

Since I didn't care all that much about the character and her story I focused on other stuff. Stuff like wondering if Buffy knew about it, why she had to go alone, what the heck does "You don't get a choice" means, why is Andrew in this comic, where's Peter Pan, etc, etc.

So, in short, meh. Maybe if it had been extended over more books I would've come to care more about the main character and not about what all of this means for the characters I actually care about.

It's finally done. Season eight's very first "episode". What do you guys think?

I found it good but not spectacular. Several retcons, ranging from the nifty to the lame, new and interesting characters in the new Slayers, a Dawn magic development to replace real development, far too much magic for my taste (how do you create tension when pretty much anything can be easily solved by a character?), not enough Giles, a surprising amount of screentime for Xander and meh, seen this before villains.

Also, and I can't help shake this, it seems like at least in part, S8 is being written as an aswer to some of the criticism of S7. I might be wrong, we'll see how the new storyline goes, but I think I saw some fans say the same thing the General says. As it is now, I'm betting on it being a simple storyline, Buffy good, Military bad. After all, I didn't see a single normal woman in the bad guys camp. I also don't think Whedon is the right writer to try and tackle in a meaningful way the issue the latest comic set up, so I'm betting on a more simplistic solution.

Hah, meta, such a wonderful thing.

I've read a lenghty post in TwoP or Buffyworld (I think) on how the Great Muppety Odin dialog for the new Buffy comic means Buffy and Xander are going to hook up (big deal about how Odin can mean Fury, etc, etc).

And I've read a post on LJ on how that means Buffy misses Spike, and Spike is Odin, and Spuffy forever, etc, etc.

Meta, AKA, reading whatever the hell you want into the text. :D

BTVS S8 - Comic Review

After reading the preview that's been made available in the Buffyworld forums, I can say that I like it.

I guess most of you have already seen the preview pages. Yes, we have Slayers jumping out of helicopters, carrying space age weapons. Which turn out to be crossbows. Allrighty then. :)

Xander is some kind of commander, back in headquarters, away from any potentionally eye poking monster. :) He still jokes about his eye, but now it's more about how he looks like Nick Fury, which all comic fans saw a mile away.

Using comics unlimited FX budget, we are treated to an exciting fight against monsters that don't look cheap at all. :) The, I'd guess, Scottish Slayer, makes a funny joke. I hope he cuts back on her Scottish accent though, a few words here or there are okay, all of them makes things hard to read for this non native English reader. And if past track performance when it comes to accents is any indication, I guess Scottish readers won't be amused. :)

The characters sound like themselves, at least when they're interacting between themselves, Buffy, Dawn and Xander.

Giant Dawn is stupid, IMO. But maybe Whedon can make it work somehow.

Buffy mentions she misses sex, which already has some people up in arms. :)

Strangely enough the US Army sucks again, after being fairly decent in S5. And Buffy's a hardcore terrorist, after destroying her hometown.

Amy returns, after surviving in the ruins of Sunnydale (underneath the crater) for who knows how long, and presumably eating other survivors.

I don't know how long it's been since the end of S7. Some clues point to the usual, 3 month period between seasons (Amy surviving), other clues point to a much longer period (the New Council apparent power, Dawn having lost her virginity, how changed Xander is). I dunno.

Misteries, some flying person when the Slayers attack the monsters (we only see a pair of boots and maybe a duster like piece of clothing), a symbol on the victims chest (who probably weren't victims at all), and who or what is Amy's boyfriend.

I like it, even though it's too short. And it's too early to say if Whedon's heart is in it, if he's going to treat the characters respectfully, etc. etc.
Hi.

Long time no see. :) Well, not quite, I've been lurking around here fairly often, though not as much as I once did.

So, goings on in my life.

My grandfather died. Can't really say it surprised me, since he'd been suffering from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's for a few years now. Seeing him change from who he was into someone who didn't know what he was doing, couldn't recognize anyone, pretty much unaware of anything else around him, that was probably harder than learning of his death. I'm still not exactly sure of how I feel about it.

I turned 30. I don't feel like 30. I look at the generation before my own, men who went to war, people that had children of their own earlier than that, people who had "real" jobs from before they were 15, and I haven't lived as much as they did. I don't feel 30. I feel like a big kid. Thanks to the people who wished me a happy birthday. :)

My company changed location. From a fairly well located place outside Lisbon, to the Expo 98 location. This might not mean much to you, but it's a far nicer place. :)

Started playing EVE Online. Man, MMORPG's are evil, but I'm a complete sci-fi whore, I couldn't not play after I tried it. :)

Haven't gone to the movies in a buttload of time. Man, TV is where it's at right now.

I've pre-ordered the new Buffy comics. From the previews maybe Joss Whedon has regained his love for the characters, all the characters. Still, even he handles them poorly (like I expect him to do, at least Xander), as long as it's entertaining I'll probably be there. Yes, characters are important, story and meaning is also, but quite frankly, the most important quality I expect from my entertainment, is that it's, well, entertaining. Joss Whedon can usually do entertaining. And it'll be as canon as anything Joss ever did, as in, not much.

Some nice fanfic being written. I've been reading some, but not really commenting. My bad. :(

I've pretty much lost all my drive for writing fanfic. Between the job and the aforementioned evil MMORPG (and the new Buffy "canon" that's about to hit) I haven't felt like writing. But I still want to, just don't know when.

That's pretty much it. I'll try to be on more from now on, I miss talking to you guys.
Stolen from several people.

Text matters. Subtext is important, but it isn't the be all and end all of storytelling. No amount of subtext will turn a Buffyverse vampire into a persecuted minority, Cylons aren't really Muslim Terrorists / Americans / anything else but Cylons.

In the Whedonverse your canon OTP isn't. Whedon doesn't do OTP. The ME writers disagreed over a great many number of things, pairings included. Canon pairings were designed to be broken and not perfect. Non canon pairings can only be perfect until they become canon.

Allowing the love / hate for a character / pairing to influence your meta views is bad and to be avoided.

Not all entertainment is serious, and that's okay.

"They look really hot together!" is a perfectly valid reason for an OTP. Not everything needs a deep serious reason.

Buffy can't be happy. Wanting something she can't have is at the basis of her character, and she'll always want something else than what she has.

Angel can't feel redeemed. The only person that can grant him absolution for his sins is Angel, and Angel wouldn't be Angel if he did.

If Spike had returned to Buffy he wouldn't become whoever ensouled Spike is meant to be. He would have remained Buffy's Spike, trapped being someone he might not still be.

Not every character can be redeemed.

OTP's don't matter.
Matthew was the first.

Little Matthew who had brought a playmate to their home. Someone to play with. A little girl.

What could be safer?

But the girl quickly proved to be a threat. She was impossibly strong, fast, aware, deadly!

A moment’s distraction and Matthew was dead.

The rest of the family would soon follow, she was sure of it.

She ran. Ran as fast as she could, as far as she could.

She only stopped when she finally felt safe.

A mistake.

A stake flew thru the air, pierced her heart and killed her for the second time.

"If there is someone on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal."

Also, up on Whedonesque there's a link to a Marti Noxon interview. She says she and Joss were out of ideas for BTVS, at least as far as post S7.

No, really? Good golly, I never woulda thunk it, what with the masterpiece of BtVS quality that I think S7 is! :D

Also something about a Faith series, starring Faith and Spike, and why it didn't happen. Me, quite frankly, don't care that it didn't happen, since I had had more than enough Spike in the last years of BTVS, and Faith wouldn't be enough to overcome my Spike lack of interest, especially with the history those two characters have together (AKA, none). I understand that from a marketing POV though, it made sense, since both characters seemed to have the audiences behind them.

Spike in AtS though, I liked, since there was an history there, one that was fun to explore. And I really don't think the writers at the time could have pulled an interesting FtVS series, not the BtVS ones.
