As someone who doesn't have English as his first language I've grown accustomed to using the language without knowing very well why a certain expression is appropriate or why a certain verb or phrase is correct or incorrect.

But then, after nearly a lifetime being exposed to the language, stuff sticks. :D

But today I used the expression "that's the sound of the other shoe dropping", and of course, I know what it means. I know why I used it. I just don't know WHY I used it, if you know what I mean.

Hi there. Just letting everyone know I'm still amongst the living. :)

Things I've done since my last post...

Went to see a Cirque du Soleil show, Varekai. Wonderful show, a real spectacle, though the thought that people were risking their lives to entertain me did give me pause.

Had vacations, or how you kids are calling it these days, staycations. :D Wasn't sure I was going to get the time, so I didn't really plan for anything.

Passed my driving code exam. Now all that's left is the practical driving exam.

Managed to get my weight down to 85 kilos. I've began fasting a couple of times per month, 24 or 32 hours periods, think that helped.

Bought a few games. Demigod, Sword of the Stars and Sins of a Solar Empire. Fun! :)

So that's pretty much it.

Awesome movie. I think I still prefer First Contact, but that's just because I'm more of a ST:TNG guy.

But I'm hoping I can get to watch more of this crew.

Saw it yesterday.

Look, if you're expecting anything but a Wolverine movie, AKA, watch Wolverine get hurt lots, and still hurting the other guys more, well, it's not a movie for you.

Me, I got what I was expecting.

Truth be told they could've made several good movies out of the basics of this one. They had several characters and actors that could've been better used, they could've focused more on other parts of his story, and some decisions were WTF worthy. But all in all, a decent origin movie.

And this time the actor playing Sabertooth was given some real meat to work with. :D

Hopefully we'll get a Deadpool movie too, to "fix" some of the WTF factor from this movie.

After work today went for dinner, sushi, which I love, especially with wasabi. NOM NOM NOM!
One day, I'll have it with sake even. :)

After that it was off to the movies. So, last time I went to the movies was ... Iron Man? Or that Will Smith movie where he plays a superhero?

Something like that. I used to go once or twice a week, but that feels like lifetimes ago, now, heh, not so much.

But not today. Today I was going to watch The Watchmen.

But first... Trailers. For Star Trek, and Terminator Salvation. Two franchises I'm very much a fan. Two franchises I'm sorta afraid for, but also, hopeful.

And then it was movie time.

If you know the comic it was based on, IMO, it's pretty much the best adaptation anyone could make. If Moore saw it he might even enjoy it. :D

If you don't know the comic... Well, it's a superhero movie. Written by people who didn't particularly like superheroes. In a way, it's the most realistic superhero movie ever made, since it's in a great deal a character study on what sort of people superheroes would make.

And while I enjoyed every single actor, Jackie Earle Haley playing Rorschach is the standout.

It's not a movie for everyone. It's violent, very violent, it has a fair amount of nudity (including digital penis :D), sex, disturbing images...

I definitely enjoyed it.

And for people on my flist who like Jeffrey Dean Morgan, well, he plays the biggest bastard ever. He's also a kind of Captain America. :D

But this is one fandom where I'll try and steer clear of fanfiction. I'm sure people will woobiefy both The Comedian and Rorschach. And that's wrong. Very wrong.

And to finish, here's Tim Minchin, an Australian comic/musician I've discovered on LJ several weeks ago. I'll probably end up posting every video I can find from him, even if some are pretty, hum... naughty. :D

I'm sure everyone is aware of the thin line that separates being taken seriously and being a caricature.

It's pretty much how I feel about the new villain / set-up, in these books. That is if the villain can be called a villain, after all, in the Buffyverse, what she did pretty much all of our heroes have done. Dawn probably didn't, unless it's later revealed in some flash back she accidentaly sat on someone. :)

Unless doing it to a Slayer or being oh, so very arrogant about it is what makes you a villain, I have a hard time thinking of Gigi as a villain, at least for the time being.

And I can't take it seriously, not with that dialogue. It could have worked for some aristocratic character in Black Adder, but for a serious one? You're taking the piss. :)

But, apart of my inability to take the story seriously, on account of the ridiculous dialogue, it has some nice touches. I liked the way all the Scoobies were written. We had nice continuity, with a wizard that can fly and that has surveillance pics of Buffy from the first comic, implying he was Flying Boots character from book one. The anti-Slayer organization is pulled more firmly towards the bad guy camp, and last, a nice dig at all the people who like to call Buffy Elizabeth. :)

Minor nitpick, I still have no freakin' idea when this book takes place.

If you're a fan of Joss Whedon's work you've come to realize that he isn't terribly interested in some things. Like for instance, things making sense in a world building way, or the resolution for a problem not making much rational sense.

Thing is, at least for me, if you're invested in the characters, you really don't care that for instance the answer to the important question of "How do you stop Acathla" is a McGuffin that's given to the characters on the last episode.

If, however, you don't really care about the characters then "Why didn't the Guardians show up before" or "Why are the ubervamps so easy to kill now", not to mention the "Who came up with this stupid plan" all nag at you.

So, what did I think about the book? I didn't particularly care about the main character. Yes, it's shame, but this is BtVS, you expect people to die.

Since I didn't care all that much about the character and her story I focused on other stuff. Stuff like wondering if Buffy knew about it, why she had to go alone, what the heck does "You don't get a choice" means, why is Andrew in this comic, where's Peter Pan, etc, etc.

So, in short, meh. Maybe if it had been extended over more books I would've come to care more about the main character and not about what all of this means for the characters I actually care about.

Am I a bad person for wanting Darth Rosenberg to win in S6?

Somewhere someone must have written a Buffy/Hellboy crossover, featuring Clem trying to eat kittens and Hellboy stopping him? No?

And what's this I hear about a Ripper movie being pretty much approved?

Also, it's freaking hot, 40 degrees Celsius. Who stole our weather?

It's finally done. Season eight's very first "episode". What do you guys think?

I found it good but not spectacular. Several retcons, ranging from the nifty to the lame, new and interesting characters in the new Slayers, a Dawn magic development to replace real development, far too much magic for my taste (how do you create tension when pretty much anything can be easily solved by a character?), not enough Giles, a surprising amount of screentime for Xander and meh, seen this before villains.

Also, and I can't help shake this, it seems like at least in part, S8 is being written as an aswer to some of the criticism of S7. I might be wrong, we'll see how the new storyline goes, but I think I saw some fans say the same thing the General says. As it is now, I'm betting on it being a simple storyline, Buffy good, Military bad. After all, I didn't see a single normal woman in the bad guys camp. I also don't think Whedon is the right writer to try and tackle in a meaningful way the issue the latest comic set up, so I'm betting on a more simplistic solution.

I'd forgotten how much swimming tires you. :)

I used to go to the gymn, doing the usual gymn thing, weights, running, bikes, the usual. But unfortunately, like four weeks ago, I hurt my left leg. Don't ask me how, I dunno. :) Old age probably, yanno, I'm thirty now. :D

So, I started swimming. No problem with the leg, but damn, I'm tired. :)

Feeling a little worried about the recent "Big Brother is coming into fandom / LJ" allegations, I never really expected people in the US to have to deal with this kind of issues, China, okay, not the US. I'm sure at worst it'll mean a move to flocked journals, but if everyone flocks, how do you find new people to friend?

On an unrelated note, after seeing the preview for Buffy S8 next comic, I find all the "canon vs not canon" really amusing.

Hah, meta, such a wonderful thing.

I've read a lenghty post in TwoP or Buffyworld (I think) on how the Great Muppety Odin dialog for the new Buffy comic means Buffy and Xander are going to hook up (big deal about how Odin can mean Fury, etc, etc).

And I've read a post on LJ on how that means Buffy misses Spike, and Spike is Odin, and Spuffy forever, etc, etc.

Meta, AKA, reading whatever the hell you want into the text. :D
